When someone says SharePoint what he mean? Is he referring to SharePoint technology or any specific SharePoint product? The only way to known for sure is to ask him. Generally speaking, when someone says SharePoint he's just referring to SharePoint technologies, that's what I think so. Many people genuinely don't know.
To add more to confusion, I find many using specific SharePoint product such as WSS (Windows SharePoint Services) and MOSS (Microsoft Office SharePoint Server), is more confusing. Reason is, most of us don't know the difference between the two products. Most of the times WSS can be used in the same way as MOSS, so referring them generically is technically correct. For example both has document management features (MOSS has some advance features than WSS). Similarly MOSS has some in-built features for business intelligence; however that doesn't mean that you couldn't use WSS for business intelligence. So what are the differences? At first look they won't appear to be much, but it seams that MOSS 2007 is must! I will now focus on some the interesting advantages MOSS 2007 has over WSS 3.0.

Data Web Parts: One could view the list and related information could be retrieve through BDC. Report Management: Reports, spreadsheets, and data could be managed consistently. Key Performance Indicators: KPI web part could connect to analysis services, Spreadsheets, SharePoint lists and manually entered data. Email Notifications: Users could be notified by emails, for improved triggering and filtering. Single Sign On: User could sign on to multiple applications with single user id and password. Support to Personal Website: User could create personal web sites. Content Syndication: Use of RSS feeds to syndicate content managed in portal site.
